Where to Buy

Local shops · Online retailers · FFL transfers

A curated guide to buying firearms in the Portland metro area and online, with LGBTQIA+-friendly recommendations and honest assessments so you can shop with confidence.

How Buying a Firearm Works

In-Store Purchase

Walk into a local shop, choose your firearm, fill out ATF Form 4473, pass a background check, and walk out the same day. The simplest route, especially for first-time buyers.

Online + FFL Transfer

Buy online (often $50-200 cheaper), have it shipped to a local FFL dealer, complete the same paperwork there, and pick it up. See our FFL Transfer Guide below.

Oregon: No Sales Tax

Oregon is one of only five states with no sales tax. Online orders from out-of-state retailers ship tax-free. This saves you 6-10% compared to buyers in most other states.

Despite the name, this shop significantly overprices items (a former employee confirmed "insane markup" targeting uninformed buyers). Items retailing for $500 may cost $750-800 here, plus a 3% credit card surcharge and $75+ transfer fees. Predatory pricing disguised by a misleading name.

MidwayUSA -NRA Financial Ties

MidwayUSA is a quality retailer with excellent service, but their checkout "Round-Up" program has channeled $21+ millionto the NRA-ILA (the NRA's political lobbying arm). Founder Larry Potterfield also donated a 139,000 sq ft warehouse to the NRA Foundation. The NRA has historically opposed LGBTQIA+ civil rights. If you shop here, look for the Round-Up option at checkout and opt out if you prefer your money not go to NRA lobbying.

Bass Pro Shops / Cabela's -Conservative Corporate Identity

Owner Johnny Morris contributed $200,000to Trump's 2020 campaign and has been a consistent Republican donor since 1992. The company maintains formal NRA partnerships and is described as "one of the largest privately-owned conservative companies in the world." They carry a wide selection and are a legitimate retailer, but the political alignment is worth knowing.

Retailers We Don't Recommend

Palmetto State Armory (PSA)

Boogaloo marketing:In 2020, PSA produced AK-47-style pistols with "Big Igloo Aloha" Hawaiian-print designs -directly referencing the Boogaloo Boys, a militant movement calling for violent overthrow of the federal government accompanied by racial civil war. They then lobbied Congress.

Two racial discrimination lawsuits: A Black employee alleged finding a noose at his workstation alongside racial slurs and references to Black individuals killed by police. Separately, a Jewish employee alleged antisemitic harassment that managers personally witnessed but refused to address.

Deeply partisan products:Sells AR-15 lower receivers engraved with "Build the Wall," "Let's Go Brandon," and "America First" 1911 pistols. The private equity firm that owns PSA is connected to SC politician Joe Wilson's family.

Trump campaign stop:In September 2023, Trump visited a PSA location and admired a Glock with a laser-engraved portrait of himself, widely seen as endorsing the company's extremist product lines.

If you've already purchased from PSA, that's okay. Many people buy there before learning about these issues -PSA does have low prices, and their products function fine. There's no need to feel bad about a past purchase. Now you know for future buying decisions.

Is It Worth It?

Even after $25-60 in transfer fees plus ~$15-30 shipping, online prices are frequently $50-200+ less than local retail. Example: A Glock 19 Gen 5 at $599 locally might cost $479-499 online + $55 in fees = $45-65 saved. The savings grow with higher-priced firearms.

Tips for a Good Shopping Experience

What to Look For

  • Staff who ask what you need the firearm for before recommending
  • Willingness to let you handle and compare multiple firearms
  • Patient answers to beginner questions without condescension
  • Transparent pricing with no surprise fees at checkout
  • A clean, organized shop where firearms are handled safely

Red Flags

  • Pushing the most expensive option without understanding your needs
  • Dismissive of your questions or making you feel stupid
  • Political merchandise or messaging that makes you uncomfortable
  • Pressure to buy today with urgency tactics ("this deal won't last")
  • Hidden fees, credit card surcharges, or prices far above MSRP

You can always leave. You are never obligated to buy anything. If a shop doesn't feel right, walk out. There are plenty of other options. Your comfort matters more than any single transaction.
