Allison & Carey Gunworks -Permanently Closed (January 2025). They were the Pacific Northwest's only Remington and Browning authorized repair center. With their closure, there is no longer a factory-authorized service center for these brands in the region. Warranty work on Remington and Browning firearms now requires shipping to distant authorized centers.

Common Gunsmith Services Explained

Not sure what a service involves or what it should cost? Here is a plain-language breakdown of the most common gunsmith services with typical Oregon pricing.

$50 - $140

General Cleaning & Inspection

Professional deep clean: complete disassembly, cleaning of all parts, lubrication, reassembly, and function check. Catches issues you might miss at home.

When to get it: After buying a used gun, after extended storage, annually for carry guns, or if you notice function issues.

$30 - $100

Sight Installation

Removal of factory sights and installation of aftermarket sights (night sights, fiber optic, adjustable). Requires specialized tools like a sight pusher.

When to get it: When factory sights aren't cutting it. DIY sight installs can easily scratch slides or damage sights -this is worth the shop visit.

$30 - $150

Trigger Work / Drop-In Install

Installing an aftermarket trigger kit or polishing/adjusting factory trigger components for a cleaner, lighter pull. Parts not included in most quotes.

When to get it: When you want better accuracy and a smoother pull. Note: be cautious modifying triggers on carry/self-defense guns -discuss with your gunsmith.

$100 - $230

Barrel Threading

Machining threads onto a barrel to accept muzzle devices (compensators, flash hiders, suppressors). Precision matters -good shops achieve .00025" concentricity.

When to get it: Required for suppressors, compensators, or flash hiders. Also needed for pin-and-weld compliance on 14.5" barrels.

$65 - $1,200+

Cerakote / Refinishing

Polymer-ceramic coating for corrosion resistance, durability, and custom aesthetics. Harder and more durable than bluing or parkerizing. Hundreds of colors available.

When to get it: To protect against PNW moisture, restore a worn finish, or customize your firearm's appearance. Look for Cerakote Certified Applicators.

$100 - $200+

Slide Milling for Optics

CNC machining a pocket into a pistol slide to directly mount a red dot (Trijicon RMR, Holosun 507c, etc.). Sits lower and more securely than plate-mounted alternatives.

When to get it: When you want a permanent, rock-solid red dot mount with proper co-witness to your iron sights.

$75 - $250

Stippling / Grip Work

Creating textured grip patterns on polymer-framed handguns by laser or hand etching. Improves grip in wet or sweaty conditions -especially valuable in the Pacific Northwest.

When to get it: For better recoil control and grip in our rainy climate. Note: this permanently voids the factory frame warranty.

Varies

NFA Work (SBR Builds, Suppressor Install)

Work on NFA-regulated items: short-barreled rifles, suppressors, etc. SBRs, suppressors, and machine guns are all legal in Oregon. Requires ATF approval and $200 tax stamp.

When to get it: Building an SBR, installing a suppressor, or NFA engraving for Form 1 builds. Oregon Rifleworks offers $25 suppressor alignment checks.

$50 - $75

Safety Inspections

Comprehensive check of mechanical function: worn parts, potential failures, headspace issues, and general safety. Oregon Rifleworks offers free headspace checks.

When to get it: Essential when buying a used firearm. Also recommended annually for concealed carry guns.

Certifications to Look For

Understanding gunsmith credentials helps you evaluate who you are trusting with your firearm. There is no legally required certification to be a gunsmith -the only legal requirement is an FFL. Many excellent gunsmiths learned through apprenticeship or military service. Credentials are a positive signal, but experience, reputation, and quality of work matter equally.

Armorer vs. Gunsmith -What is the Difference?

Certified Armorer

Can completely disassemble, reassemble, and replace worn parts with factory components. Think: maintenance and parts replacement.

Certified Gunsmith

All armorer capabilities PLUS diagnosis, fitting, repair, heat-treatment, and custom fabrication of parts. Think: diagnosis, fabrication, and custom work.

Formal Gunsmithing Programs

Associate degrees and certificates from accredited programs. Trinidad State (CO) is one of the most respected. SDI offers online + hands-on training approved for GI Bill.

AGI (American Gunsmithing Institute)

Certified Master Armorer Course (equivalent to 15 factory armorers schools). Also offers platform-specific courses: Glock, 1911, AR-15, S&W M&P, and more.

Factory Armorer Certifications

Manufacturer-run training for specific platforms. A Glock Armorer can fully disassemble, maintain, and replace parts on Glocks. Most common factory cert.

Brownells Certifications

AR-15/M4 Armorer and Alternative Finishes Certificate programs. Industry-respected training from the largest gunsmithing supply company.

Cerakote Certified Applicator

Official Cerakote training in surface prep, application, and curing. Look for this specifically when seeking Cerakote work. Certified shops in our region: McCluskey Arms, Black Flag Armory, JBRC, Vancouver Gun Lab.

FEGA (Firearms Engravers Guild of America)

Specialized in custom hand engraving. Only ~41 certified masters in the U.S. Relevant for engraving work, not general gunsmithing.

NRA Armorer / Gunsmithing Schools

Four NRA-approved schools nationwide offering short-term summer courses and long-term certification programs in barreling, machine shop, engraving, and metal finishes.

Red Flags to Watch For

Most gunsmiths are honest professionals, but keep an eye out for these warning signs.

No credentials AND no verifiable experience

While formal credentials aren't legally required, the gunsmith should be able to explain their background. The only legal requirement is an FFL.

Extremely long turnaround with no communication

A 4-6 week backlog is normal for a busy shop. Months of silence with your firearm? That's a problem.

Unwilling to explain the work

A good gunsmith tells you what they'll do, why, and what to expect. Dismissiveness is a deal-breaker.

No written estimates

Always get a written estimate before leaving your firearm. It should include work scope, parts, labor cost, and expected completion date.

Using your firearm as a test platform

Watch for uneven grinding, gritty triggers, wobbling sights, or parts that don't fit snugly. These indicate careless work.

No FFL license

Any commercial gunsmith must have an active FFL. You can verify at ATF's FFL EZ Check tool.

Pressure to add unnecessary work

A trustworthy gunsmith tells you what you actually need, not what maximizes the bill.

No warranty on work performed

Reputable shops stand behind their work. McCluskey Arms, for example, explicitly warrants all gunsmith work.

How to Choose a Gunsmith

1. Start Small

Before trusting a shop with a $500 custom job, try a sight install or basic service first to evaluate their work quality and communication.

2. Match the Specialist to the Work

An AK specialist (McCluskey Arms) may not be ideal for 1911 work (Shooter's Service Center). A Cerakote shop may not do precision barrel work. Ask about their specialty.

3. Ask at Your Range

Range staff and fellow shooters are often the best source of gunsmith recommendations. The Portland shooting community is well-connected.

4. Check Reviews Across Platforms

Don't rely on just one source. Check Yelp, Google, Northwest Firearms forum, Reddit (r/pdxgunnuts, r/ORGuns), and the BBB.

5. Get Written Estimates

Before leaving your firearm, get a written estimate covering the work scope, parts needed, labor cost, and expected completion date.

6. Ask About Your Specific Firearm

"Have you worked on [your model] before?" is a perfectly reasonable question. Specialists will give you better results than generalists for platform-specific work.

7. Trust Your Gut About the Atmosphere

If you feel unwelcome, judged, or uncomfortable, find another shop. There are plenty of options in Portland and beyond.

8. Ask About Turnaround Upfront

Get a specific estimate ("2-3 weeks") not a vague "we'll get to it." Ask what happens if it takes longer than expected.

DIY Resources

Want to learn more about maintaining your own firearms? These are reputable sources for education and parts.

AGI (American Gunsmithing Institute)

Video-based armorer and gunsmithing courses for specific platforms

Brownells

The largest gunsmithing supply company -parts, tools, educational resources, and armorer certifications

MidwayUSA

Even if you prefer DIY, consider having a professional do your first disassembly/reassembly so you can watch and learn. Many gunsmiths are happy to walk you through the process.
